South Africa's Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has cancelled the country's participation in this year's Venice Biennale, citing concerns over a proposed artwork titled "Elegy" by artist Gabrielle Goliath that references violence in Gaza. Michael Sheen has launched the Welsh National Theatre, using his own funds to establish the company after the previous National Theatre of Wales closed in late 2024 due to funding cuts. As the founding artistic director, Sheen is set to star in the inaugural production of Thornton Wilder's 'Our Town,' which has been adapted to a Welsh setting with a cast of 19 and a creative team that includes Russell T Davies.
Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist and activist, will open his first solo exhibition in India at the Nature Morte gallery in New Delhi from January 15 to February 22.
