Universal screening for type 1 diabetes improves detection

A study coordinated by Helmholtz Munich suggests that screening all children for early signs of type 1 diabetes can significantly improve detection rates and health outcomes. Over a decade, the Fr1da study screened more than 220,000 children in Bavaria, identifying 590 in early stages of the disease; 81 percent of those who progressed to clinical type 1 diabetes had been flagged by screening. The findings indicate that most children who develop the disease do not have a family history, underscoring the need for universal screening beyond those at genetic risk.
