Unknown Hans Baldung Grien Drawing Discovered in Alsace
A previously unknown drawing by Hans Baldung Grien, a prominent Northern Renaissance artist, has been discovered in Alsace and is set to be auctioned on March 23 at Drouot in Paris. The drawing, dated 1517 and created with silverpoint, is estimated to fetch between €1.5 million and €3 million. It remained in the family of the portrayed subject, Susanna Pfeffinger, for over 500 years before being authenticated by art expert Patrick de Bayser.
Pennsylvania man sentenced for museum thefts spanning two decades
Joseph Atsus, a 51-year-old member of a Pennsylvania crime ring, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for his role in a series of museum thefts that occurred between 1999 and 2019. The group, which targeted smaller museums across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and North Dakota, stole millions of dollars worth of art, including a painting attributed to Jackson Pollock. In addition to his prison sentence, Atsus was ordered to pay over $1 million in restitution.
Colombian artist Beatriz González dies at 93
Beatriz González, a prominent Colombian artist known for her transformative contributions to post-war painting, passed away on January 9 at the age of 93. Born in Bucaramanga in 1932, González was recognized for her ability to merge art with social commentary, notably through her influential work 'Los suicidas del Sisga.' Prior to her death, she had entrusted the management of her extensive body of work, valued between $1 million and $255 million, to Casa Riegner, a gallery with which she had a long-standing relationship.
