Former French Minister Jack Lang Linked to Epstein Files
Jack Lang, former French culture minister and current president of the Institut du Monde Arabe, has been named in newly released documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, revealing that he maintained contact with the convicted sex offender and requested favors such as the use of Epstein's car and private plane. The files, released by the US Department of Justice on January 30, include extensive communications involving Lang and his family, as well as other prominent art figures like collectors Steve Tisch and Leon Black. Lang, who was introduced to Epstein by filmmaker Woody Allen, stated he was unaware of Epstein's criminal activities at the time of their association.
Mnuchin Gallery to Close in February 2026
Mnuchin Gallery in New York will close at the end of February 2026 following the death of its founder, Robert Mnuchin, on December 20, 2025. The gallery, which operated for 34 years and showcased significant postwar artists, will conclude its program after its final exhibition. Meanwhile, Stephen Friedman Gallery has entered administration as of February 2, 2026, resulting in the closure of its London location after 30 years, following a £1.7 million loss in 2023.
National Gallery of Art acquires Gentileschi painting
The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, has acquired Artemisia Gentileschi's painting 'Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy' (circa 1625), marking the first work by the artist to join its collection. Previously sold at auction for €865,500 in 2014, the painting will be displayed in the museum's permanent collection galleries starting later this month.
India Returns to Venice Biennale with New Pavilion
India has announced its participation in the 61st Venice Biennale, returning after a seven-year hiatus, with a pavilion curated by Amin Jaffer titled "Geographies of Distance: Remembering Home." The exhibition will feature five artists—Alwar Balasubramaniam (Bala), Sumakshi Singh, Ranjani Shettar, Asim Waqif, and Skarma Sonam Tashi—who utilize traditional organic materials to explore the concept of home as a dynamic state influenced by displacement and memory. The pavilion is supported by India's Ministry of Culture, the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, and the Serendipity Arts Foundation.
