Retired Teacher Uncovers Rare 1897 Méliès Film
Bill McFarland, a retired high school teacher, discovered a long-lost 45-second film by French cinema pioneer Georges Méliès in a trunk that belonged to his great-grandfather, an itinerant showman. The film, titled "Gugusse and the Automaton," made in 1897, was identified by specialists at the Library of Congress after McFarland donated the trunk's contents, which included other early films, following unsuccessful attempts to place them with museums. The Library has since digitized the film, which features the first known moving image of a robot and highlights Méliès's innovative filmmaking techniques.
Sotheby’s to Auction $40 Million Picasso in 2026
Sotheby’s will auction a $40 million Pablo Picasso painting, _Arlequin (Buste)_, from the collection of late Surrealist artist Enrico Donati on May 19, 2026. The painting, which features a harlequin emerging from geometric forms, was purchased by Donati for approximately $12,000 in the 1940s. In addition to this leading piece, thirteen other works from the Donati collection will also be sold, including a Wassily Kandinsky valued at $12 million to $18 million.
Gagosian to Open New Space with Duchamp Exhibition
Gagosian will inaugurate a new ground-floor space at 980 Madison Avenue on April 25, 2026, with an exhibition featuring key works by Marcel Duchamp, including iconic readymades created in 1964. This exhibition coincides with Duchamp's first retrospective in the United States since 1973 at the Museum of Modern Art, which runs until August 22. Among the works on display is Bicycle Wheel (1964, after 1913 lost original), the only surviving example not held by a major institution.
