AI Model Reassesses Holbein Sketches, Corrects Identities

Researchers at the University of Bradford have utilized an AI model to reassess two sketches by Hans Holbein, traditionally misidentified for centuries. The analysis suggests that a drawing long thought to be a portrait of Anne Boleyn may actually depict her mother, Elizabeth Howard, while another sketch, previously labeled as 'Unidentified Woman,' is likely to be Boleyn herself. The study highlights the potential for AI to clarify historical attributions in the Holbein corpus, where only 30 out of 85 drawings have been firmly identified.

Meanwhile, the inclusion of Russia in the Biennale has sparked controversy amid ongoing EU sanctions related to the war in Ukraine, leading to the resignation of the jury for the Golden Lion award, which stated that countries facing charges from the International Criminal Court would not be considered.
