The European Commission has approved €150 million in funding through the European Defence Fund to support the development of a next-generation main battle tank and a multiple-launch rocket system, led by France and Germany. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on U.S. defense capabilities and address capacity shortfalls in European land forces, as nations like France and the UK face challenges with aging equipment. The tank program will feature advanced protection, mobility, and firepower, while a parallel effort will enhance long-range strike capabilities across the continent.
The Vulkan Group, an extreme left-wing organization, has claimed responsibility for an arson attack that caused a blackout affecting approximately 45,000 households and over 2,000 businesses in southern Berlin. The attack, which involved the destruction of cables connected to a major gas-fired power plant, was described by Berlin's Mayor Kai Wegner as terrorism. As of January 6, 2026, around 30,000 households and about 1,700 businesses remain without power, with full restoration expected by Thursday.
