New Chinese System Extends Organ Viability for Transplants

Chinese researchers have introduced a new Multithermic Machine Perfusion System (MTMP) that can preserve transplant organs at temperatures below zero, extending their viability from hours to days. This system, capable of maintaining organs like rat hearts and pig kidneys in liquid nitrogen at minus 150C for up to seven days, could significantly impact the organ transplant landscape in the U.S., potentially clearing the entire waiting list if just half of currently discarded hearts were preserved. The study highlights the need for advancements in organ preservation technology to address critical gaps in the current system.
