Coal Pollution Cuts Solar Energy Output by 5.8%

Coal Pollution Cuts Solar Energy Output by 5.8%

Research led by the University of Oxford and University College London has found that coal pollution significantly reduces the energy output of solar photovoltaic installations, with aerosols decreasing global solar electricity by 5.8% in 2023, equating to 111 terawatt-hours of lost energy. This loss represents nearly one-third of the gains from new solar capacity added between 2017 and 2023, highlighting an overlooked interaction between fossil fuel use and renewable energy. The study particularly noted that China, the world's largest solar producer, experienced a 7.7% reduction in solar output due to aerosols, with approximately 29% of these losses attributed to coal emissions.

SMILE Mission to Launch May 19 to Study Solar Wind

The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE), a joint mission between the European Space Agency and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is set to launch on May 19 from French Guiana. This spacecraft will utilize a soft x-ray imager to map the Earth's magnetic shield and monitor its interaction with solar wind, providing insights into solar storms that can disrupt technology on Earth. SMILE represents a significant collaboration between Europe and China, marking the first mission jointly conceived and operated by the two entities.

arXiv enforces new rules on AI-generated papers

arXiv, the preprint server hosting over two million papers, has implemented new moderation guidelines to address the rise of AI-generated content. Thomas G. Dietterich, chair of arXiv's computer science section, announced that authors whose papers exhibit clear signs of AI generation without proper verification will face a one-year ban from submissions. This policy aims to maintain the platform's standards by prohibiting fully automated content and requiring mandatory disclosure of AI usage.
