Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, has sacked Robert Jenrick from his role as shadow justice secretary and suspended his party membership after discovering his plans to defect to Reform UK. Following his dismissal, Jenrick publicly announced his defection alongside Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, criticizing both the Conservative and Labour parties for failing to address the country's needs.
The UK government has introduced new measures through the Armed Forces Bill to enhance the Strategic Reserve by raising the maximum recall age for veterans from 55 to 65 and lowering the threshold for mobilization to include 'warlike preparations.' Approximately 95,000 individuals are currently estimated to be liable for recall, and these reforms aim to utilize the expertise of former service personnel amid increasing national security threats. The National Audit Office (NAO) has reported that seven hospitals in the UK, constructed with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), will miss their rebuilding deadline, with completion now expected in 2032 or 2033, three years later than the government's target of 2030. Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged that the original New Hospitals Programme, which aimed to build 40 new hospitals by 2030, was unrealistic, and the NAO highlighted significant operational risks and rising costs associated with maintaining the aging facilities, which will require over £500 million in investment by 2025.
The UK government will launch the Crisis and Resilience Fund on 1 April 2026, which will provide grant funding to local authorities in England to support communities and assist individuals facing financial crises. The fund will operate until 31 March 2029, with provisional allocations and draft grant conditions already published.
