New National Police Service to Consolidate Crime Investigations
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the creation of a new National Police Service (NPS) in England and Wales, aimed at consolidating counter-terror, fraud, and criminal gang investigations under one organization, often referred to as the 'British FBI'. The NPS will integrate existing agencies like the National Crime Agency and regional organized crime units, allowing local police forces to focus more on community issues such as shoplifting and anti-social behavior. The reforms, which include reducing the number of police forces and requiring officers to obtain licenses, are set to be detailed in a White Paper on Monday.
NHS launches cancer gene database for risk assessment
The NHS is launching a pioneering cancer gene database, the National Inherited Cancer Predisposition Register, which will track 120 genes associated with increased cancer risk. This initiative, part of a ten-year plan, aims to allow tens of thousands of patients, particularly those with family histories of cancer, to assess their genetic risk and access early screenings and personalized treatments. Health Secretary Wes Streeting noted that this world-leading register could significantly enhance preventive care and management of cancer risks.
Protesters Arrested for Breaching Wormwood Scrubs Prison Grounds
Protesters supporting a Palestine Action-linked activist on hunger strike were arrested after breaching the grounds of Wormwood Scrubs prison in London. The Metropolitan Police reported that the group refused to leave when instructed, allegedly blocking prison staff and threatening officers, with some individuals entering a staff area of the prison. They were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass.
