UK Labour Market Weakens Amid Falling Employment and Wages
The UK labour market is showing signs of significant weakness as BDO’s Employment Index fell to 93.30 in January, its lowest level since March 2011, amid declining employment and hiring demand. HMRC reported a loss of 43,000 payrolled employees in December, marking the sharpest decline since late 2020, while job postings remain 26 per cent below pre-pandemic levels. Wage growth has also slowed, with annual posted wage growth dropping to 4.3 per cent in December, the lowest since early 2022, as the unemployment-to-vacancy ratio rises to 2.5.
