Anthony Esan Sentenced to Life for Stabbing Officer
Anthony Esan was sentenced to life imprisonment for the attempted murder of Lt Col Mark Teeton, whom he stabbed at least 12 times in a targeted attack near Brompton Barracks in July 2024. A high court judge imposed a minimum term of seven years and 162 days, alongside a section 45 hybrid hospital order, allowing for Esan's return to prison if his mental health improves. Lt Col Teeton, who survived the life-threatening injuries, expressed gratitude to the public and emergency services for their support during his recovery.
Bank of England's Huw Pill advises against rate cuts
Huw Pill, the Chief Economist of the Bank of England, advised against further interest rate cuts, stating that underlying inflation in Britain is stabilizing at approximately 2.5%, above the BoE's 2% target. Pill, who has opposed the last four rate cuts, emphasized the need to maintain the current rate of 3.75% to ensure inflationary pressures are adequately managed, despite a divided Monetary Policy Committee where recent votes have shown a 5-4 split on rate decisions.
