UK Faces Energy Price Shock Amid Middle East Conflict
UK businesses and households are facing a new price shock in energy bills as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has led to significant disruptions in oil and gas supplies. Since the onset of hostilities, oil prices have surged approximately 18%, with Brent crude nearing $83 a barrel, while UK wholesale gas prices have more than doubled to over 150p a therm, prompting the highest spike in the electricity wholesale market. UK Government Admits Lorries Bypass Meat Inspections
The UK government has acknowledged that lorries carrying potentially unsafe meat imports are bypassing border checks, revealing significant flaws in the post-Brexit inspection regime. According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), 18% of consignments selected for inspection in November last year were classified as 'drive-bys,' meaning they were not checked as required. The House of Commons environment, food and rural affairs committee highlighted that this system allows unchecked meat and plant products to enter the UK, raising concerns about food safety.
