UK caps student loan interest rates at 6%
The UK government has announced a cap on the maximum interest rates for Plan 2 and Plan 3 student loans at 6%, set to take effect from 1 September 2026 for the 2026/27 academic year. This measure aims to protect graduates in England and Wales from rising loan costs linked to inflationary pressures, particularly those stemming from global conflicts, including developments in the Middle East. Minister for Skills Jacqui Smith stated that the cap is part of ongoing efforts to reform the student finance system and provide immediate protection for borrowers.
UK Taxpayers Face Higher Burden from Allowance Changes
British taxpayers will face increased financial pressure due to a rule change regarding the application of the personal allowance, which remains fixed at £12,570 until 2031. Starting in April 2027, the allowance will be applied first to earned income, self-employment, and pensions, leaving less available to offset property income, savings interest, or dividends, potentially pushing more income into higher tax bands. This change coincides with rising tax rates on various income types, exacerbating the impact on those with diversified income streams.
UK Skilled Worker Visa Applications Plummet 44 Percent
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's implementation of stricter entry requirements for migrants has led to a 44% decrease in applications for skilled worker visas in the UK, with 34,700 applications recorded in the year to March 2026. The Labour government's reforms, which include raising the salary threshold to £41,700 and tightening job sponsorship criteria, have contributed to this decline. Additionally, applications from dependants on the skilled worker route fell by 20% over the same period.
