Christie's will auction works from the $65 million personal collection of the late Marian Goodman, a prominent New York art dealer who passed away in January at the age of 97. Greece enacts law to combat art forgery
Greece has enacted a new law aimed at combating art forgery, establishing a registry of expert art appraisers and creating an independent Department of Works of Art within the culture ministry. The legislation, introduced as bill No. 5271/2026, outlines specific penalties for art forgery, including imprisonment of at least six months and fines starting at €5,000, escalating to ten years’ imprisonment and fines between €10,000 and €300,000 for more serious offenses. This move follows a rise in counterfeit incidents in the Greek art market, highlighted by the 2025 arrests of 13 individuals in a forgery and antiquities trafficking ring.
Melissa Chiu appointed director of Guggenheim Museum
Melissa Chiu has been appointed as the new director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, effective September 1, 2026, after serving as the director of the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC, since 2014. During her tenure at the Hirshhorn, Chiu increased fundraising by 75%, more than doubled attendance, and led a $68 million renovation of the museum's sculpture garden, set to open in October.
