UK National Gallery Cuts Costs to Address Deficit

The UK National Gallery has completed a voluntary redundancy process aimed at addressing a projected £8.2 million deficit, achieving annual savings of £2 million. This includes £1.5 million from staff departures under a voluntary exit scheme and an additional £500,000 from a recruitment pause. The gallery, which employs nearly 500 staff, has confirmed that no compulsory redundancies will occur as a result of this scheme.

Melissa Chiu appointed director of Guggenheim Museum

Melissa Chiu has been appointed as the new director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, effective September 1, 2026, after serving as director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., for 12 years. During her tenure at the Hirshhorn, Chiu increased fundraising by 75% and oversaw record-breaking exhibitions, including a survey of Yayoi Kusama that attracted 160,000 visitors. She will report to Mariët Westermann, who will transition to managing the Guggenheim's international institutions.
