EU LNG Imports from Yamal Project Surge 17%
In the first quarter of 2026, European Union countries received 97% of their liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the Yamal LNG project in Siberia, totaling 5 million tonnes, a 17% increase from the same period last year. This surge in imports, amounting to approximately €2.88 billion, comes amid reduced supplies from the Middle East and highlights the EU's ongoing dependence on Russian energy resources, despite plans to phase out such imports by the end of 2027.
EU Rejects US Approach to China Relations
EU Industry Commissioner Stéphane Séjourné stated that Europe will not adopt the same approach to China as the United States, emphasizing the bloc's aim to reduce dependence on China in strategic sectors while maintaining openness to foreign investment. He highlighted the ongoing negotiations for the Industrial Accelerator Act, which seeks to limit Chinese access to European public procurement and impose stricter ownership requirements on large investments. Bulgartransgaz to Tender 1.5 Million MWh LNG Supply
Bulgartransgaz EAD, Bulgaria's gas transmission operator, is set to conduct a tender for the supply of 1.5 million MWh of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet technological needs in its gas transmission system until September 2027. The tender, which will take place on April 30, 2026, will be conducted through the Balkan Gas Hub EAD trading platform, ensuring compliance with European market principles and sourcing from non-sanctioned countries. CEO Vladimir Malinov emphasized the importance of reliable LNG supplies from partners like the U.S. to enhance energy security in Bulgaria and the region.
