Ninth Century Mass Grave Discovered in Serbia

Archaeologists have uncovered a mass grave from the ninth century BCE in Gomolava, Serbia, containing the remains of 77 individuals, predominantly women and children, who appear to have been victims of targeted violence. Of the 72 individuals whose sex was determined, 51 were identified as female, and two-thirds were children or adolescents, with many showing signs of lethal injuries consistent with violence. This discovery, detailed in a study published on February 23, highlights a significant shift in power dynamics and gender relations during a tumultuous period in southeastern Europe.
