WMO reports 2015-2025 as hottest decade recorded

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that the period from 2015 to 2025 has been the hottest 11 years on record, with 2025 ranking as the second or third warmest year since observations began. The report highlights that atmospheric carbon dioxide and ocean heat reached unprecedented levels, with Earth's energy imbalance also hitting a record high, indicating a significant increase in heat stored in the planet's systems. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated that human activities are disrupting the natural equilibrium, leading to extreme weather events and long-term climate consequences.

Scotland launches pilot program for SMA newborn screening

Scotland has initiated a pilot program to test all newborns for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a genetic disorder that affects three to four babies annually and can lead to severe muscle weakness and reduced life expectancy without treatment. The screening will be conducted through the existing heel prick test, allowing for early detection and intervention before symptoms appear. Dr. Sarah Smith, director of the screening laboratory in Glasgow, emphasized the importance of pre-symptomatic identification to prevent the onset of symptoms.
