New research published in Psychological Review reveals that the brain processes imagined thoughts and real sensations in similar ways, challenging previous understandings of imagination and perception. The study indicates that approximately 99% of the brain's energy consumption is dedicated to internal activities rather than external stimuli, suggesting that imagination may modulate existing neural activity rather than simply replaying visual experiences. This finding implies that the brain's visual areas continuously generate fragments of known faces, with imagination serving to stabilize these fragments into coherent images.
The National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has ceased publication of its influential journal ranking, which has guided research evaluation in China for over 20 years, leaving academics uncertain about future assessment methods. The closure, announced on March 24, coincided with the launch of a new ranking system called Xinrui Scholar, developed by former CAS staff, which aims to provide a similar service but raises questions about its independence and effectiveness. Scholars are now exploring alternative evaluation methods as the CAS ranking's retirement marks a significant shift in China's scientific evaluation landscape.
