Nigerian Scientist Develops Affordable Rotavirus Diagnostic Kit

Nigerian virologist Margaret Oluwatoyin Japhet has developed a low-cost rapid diagnostic kit for rotavirus, aimed at improving the identification of severe diarrhea causes in children. This kit, designed for use in resource-limited settings, does not require complex machinery or extensive training, addressing a critical gap in diagnostics that has contributed to approximately 48,000 annual deaths from rotavirus-related diarrhea in Nigeria. Japhet's work could enhance disease surveillance and outbreak response in sub-Saharan Africa, where current diagnostic methods are often inadequate.
