UK MPs Vote to Remove Immunity Clause from Legacy Act
MPs in the UK Parliament voted to remove a controversial immunity clause from the Troubles legacy legislation, with 373 in favor and 106 against. This decision follows a High Court ruling deeming parts of the 2023 Legacy Act incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, and it allows for the relisting of several hundred civil cases related to the Troubles. The remedial order must now be approved by the House of Lords before it takes effect.
UK December borrowing falls to £11.6 billion
The UK government borrowed £11.6 billion in December, significantly lower than the £13 billion forecast by economists and 38% less than the same month last year, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This decline was attributed to a rise in tax revenues, which increased by £7.7 billion to £94 billion, while public spending rose modestly to £92.9 billion. Despite the improvement, December's borrowing figure remains the tenth highest for the month since records began in 1993 and is higher than the £8.1 billion borrowed in December 2023.
