RMT Union to Strike on London Underground Starting April 21

High-Priority Families Face Long Waits for Social Housing
A data investigation by The House has revealed that families in the highest priority bands for social housing in England are facing significant wait times, with some local authorities reporting waits of over two years. On average, applicants placed in social housing by 147 councils in 2024-25 spent 319 days in the highest priority band, while those still awaiting rehousing averaged 551 days. The findings highlight a chronic shortage of social rent homes, exacerbating the difficulties faced by families in urgent need of suitable accommodation.
UK job vacancies fall to lowest level since 2021
The UK jobs market deteriorated as job vacancies fell by an estimated 29,000 in the three months to March 2026, reaching their lowest level since May 2021 at approximately 711,000, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Despite a decrease in vacancies, the unemployment rate declined to 4.9% from 5.2%, attributed to a rise in the number of people not actively seeking work. The ONS noted that vacancies dropped in 14 out of 18 industry sectors, while the number of payrolled employees fell by an estimated 9,000, with further declines expected due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
