First Afghan migrant convicted under new UK immigration law
Tajik Mohammad, a 32-year-old Afghan migrant, became the first individual convicted under the new Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act for endangering others during a sea crossing to the UK. He pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court to piloting an overcrowded dinghy across the English Channel in hazardous weather on January 17, abandoning the vessel and its passengers when a rescue ship arrived. Mohammad will be sentenced on June 10, with the offence carrying a potential prison term of up to five years.
